Try It Once—Get Hooked for Life
Rock climbing is more than a sport—it’s a full-body puzzle with adrenaline and epic views. We followed Alexander, weekend climber and all-around enthusiast, for a crash course on getting started.
“Most people think it’s extreme,” Alexander says, “but it’s actually very controlled. Start indoors—learn the ropes (literally)—then take it outside when you’re ready.” Many gyms now offer intro classes for all ages.
Shoes, a harness, and a chalk bag are your basic starter kit. Many gyms rent gear, so you can try before you buy. Alexander suggests: “Don’t get obsessed with fancy stuff early. Your technique matters more than your gear.”
What keeps people coming back? “Climbing makes you think,” Alexander says. “Every route is a puzzle. It’s problem-solving with gravity involved.” Plus, the view from the top isn’t bad either.
